My favorite part of a house

One of my dreams is to have a very large, very clean and very organized kitchen. Since I was child, I never experienced having a lovely kitchen. Well, most houses here in the Philippines have those that we call dirty kitchen and that was what we had in our house. I never learned to cook before because I was a bit choosy. I wanted a kitchen like those that we see in cooking shows. I actually still want that now. Haha!

About a year ago, my husband and I went house-hunting near my sister’s home in Quezon City. We visited this Bungalow type house and I really liked the place. Plus, it has a very gorgeous kitchen. The house was also fully finished already and you just need to bring in your things and you’re done! The kitchen already has tiled counters, very chic cupboards and cabinets and a perfect place for the stove. I could just imagine bringing in our own stuff there and having kitchen gifts delivered right there.

Well, we were not able to get that house because it’s priced way out of our budget plus I was pregnant with Kharl then and we had to make sure we get plenty of savings for the baby. But we’ll be pursuing finding a home soon. And when we do, I’ll make sure to find a nice kitchen with it. Haha!!

Ways of getting our dream house

My husband and I are already talking about getting our own house. As of now, we’re living in my mother-in-law’s place. It’s good because we’re not paying any rent here. But of course, we want to have a place that we could call our own someday. And besides, our baby is already growing and pretty soon, we’ll be wanting to add another baby in the family.

We’re thinking of the different ways that can help us have our dream house. One of that is applying for a loan from a bank. There are several banks that offers loans in varying interests. Another option is to get loans from government agencies since I believe they offer less interests and better deals. Then of course, there’s also the in-house financing. Though I’ve read that this option will give us larger interests overtime.

An officemate I know has already purchased a house using the housing loan that he was able to get through our company. He is now in his 5th year of payment and they were able to move already. Hopefully, we’ll be able to start our own journey to owning our very own place this year.

When it comes to home improvement, we usually think of the interior of our homes. We come up with ideas on how we can improve the look and feel of our home and make it a more pleasant place to live in. And when we’re finished with the inside, we go out and have a look at the outside of our home. What do we see? A boring and not so appealing walkway or patio or backyard or whatever you have outside. Ceiling lights are the most conspicuous among other types of lights. Lights that fall under this category are used in almost all parts of the house, may it be the living room, kitchen, dining area, bedroom, bathroom, garage or basement.

Determining what kind of light or lights to use in an area of your home requires a lot of consideration. Of course, first thing you consider is the size of the room or area. A traditional sized chandelier will look out of the way if placed in a small living room. On the other hand, placing a small chandelier in a huge living room will probably be useless since it will not be enough to light the room, plus it probably wouldn’t even be noticed because of the size.

Let us look at the diffent types of ceiling lights and when or where it is best to use.

1. Chandeliers. These type of light fixture is usually seen in living rooms because of its decorative look. It is mounted in the ceiling and usually have several arms with lights and crystal prisms. The combination of lights and crystal prisms are what makes the ambience of a room with a chandelier very classy and sophisticated. There are also different kinds of chandeliers from single to multi tiered lights, foyer chandeliers, mini chandeliers, and a lot more.

2. Pendant lights. This type of light is a single fixture that is hang from the ceiling by its chain or rod. You will usually see this type being used in the kitchen or dining area. It is made up of one light and can illuminate a small room. Pendant lights also come in sizes from mini pendant lights to foyer and those multi light pendants.

3. Flush Mount lights. This light fixture is best used in rooms with low ceilings. It is usually ornate and attached directly to the ceiling. If you prefer the look of having handles or rods attached to your light fixture but room is just small and ceiling is a little low, then go for Semi-flush mount lights. It is usually attached to a rod or handle.

4. Pot racks. This type of light fixture has double use. It provides light to a kitchen and it serves as a handler for pots and plans.

I was browsing through a magazine and I spotted a feature article for a home designed by a famous Interior Designer. The design of the house, the furnitures style, the lighting fixtures design, everything was so modern and it looked fabulous.

The lights used in this gorgeous home was what really caught my eye. The designer used traditional designs and transformed it to fall under contemporary lighting. Looking at the pictures in that magazine made me think of the future, a world of steel and silver.

Contemporary or modern lighting designs are best suited for those home owners who are trying to have a sleek and trendy look. When you hear this kind of design, think of chromes, stainless steel, and nickels. These are usually the ones used to have that contemporary feel. But of course, other finishes are used as well.

There is such a huge variety to choose from when it comes to modern lighting. This is one part of the home design that is usually most thought about. After all, who will give light to your home sweet home if not for these.

5 Floor Tips for your Home

Choosing whether you want a tiled floor or a carpeted floor for your home is a big decision. You have to think of the advantages and disadvantages of choosing one over the other. Here are some tips that could help you make the right choices.

1. Going for a tiled floor is more practical than having a carpeted floor. Tiles are easier to clean so you wouldn’t worry about spilled beverages or food spills. If some pieces gets stained or damaged, you can just easily replace that area only unlike if the stained area is a part of a huge carpet, in which case you have to have the whole of it cleaned or worse, replaced.

2. For areas like bathroom or basement wherein the area is prone to wet floor, it is advisable to use tiles. A basement floor tile also acts as a vapor barrier. Since basements can become pretty chilly, there are floor tiles really designed to control the thermal in that area.

3. Wood flooring is perfect for those who wants a casual look and feel. However, you must consider the type of home you have and the amount of traffic that your floor will get. Wood flooring is good if you have little ones in the family because they can roam around the area and you don’t have to worry too much if they slip on the floor. Having pets around will mean you have to say goodbye to your carpet.

4. For areas near entrances, floor should be durable to outdoor elements such as wind or rain. Don’t choose laminate wood flooring in areas with high moisture since this can damage the flooring.

5. Cost of maintenance is one of the important things to consider because you don’t want spending floor expenses on a quarterly basis. Choose what you think would last a long time in your home.
