I’m sure most of you have heard of the much talked about sin tax bill. Some people agrees with it while others, specifically those who will be greatly affected if the bill pushes through, are very much against it. Now, do we really understand this bill and the reason why they are passing this as a bill?
Let me share my own opinion about this bill. I hope nobody bashes me for this post. Haha!
First off, what is the sin ta bill all about. This bill simply put is a way to earn or raise revenues by legislating a tax measure for alcohoic beverages and tobacco products. By applying huge taxes on alcohols and premium cigars, our government will be able to raise funds from this.
Personally, I’d like to think that this is a good bill. Not because it will generate funds for our government (in which we won’t have any way to make sure it doesn’t go to the pockets of government officials), but because I believe this will help solve some of the notable health problems that we have here in the Philippines. Alcohols and cigarettes are priced way too low that even people who doesn’t have work, or even can’t afford a decent meal, can still buy a small bottle of alcohol or a stick of cigarette. If both of these products would have huge taxes applied, then their prices will skyrocket and most people will not be able to afford it anymore, which I believe is a good thing.
Of course, this is just my opinion and some might not agree with me. But hey, whatever the outcome of this talk about the bill, I just hope they get to a conclusion that would be beneficial for everyone.
