Trekking or hiking is one outdoor activity that I haven’t tried yet and I don’t know if i have the guts to even try in the future. Aside from the fact that I’m afraid of heights, I’m a little clumsy at times and I have the tendency to panic easily, so I’m afraid that my hiking experience would just be a disaster and I might just ruin somebody else’s hike.

Despite this fear, I am still interested in hiking or trekking. I have some friends who in into this hobby and I sometimes feel jealous whenever they have a hike. They look really cool with their getup and their huge backpacks.

Speaking of backpacks, I sometimes wonder what is inside their bags and how on earth can they carry those huge things on their back.

Here is a list of the essential things that a friend of mine shared that is inside here backpack.

1. Water
2. Food
3. Map
4. Compass
5. Clothes
6. Flashlight
7. First aid
8. Knife
9. Sunglasses
10. Matches
11. Insect repellant
12. Blanket or jacket

According to my friend hiker, when they have long-distance hikes, they also bring Trekking Poles to assist them especially if they know they’re passing rough terrains. I really don’t know how she can carry all those in her bag and still able to walk miles and even climb terrains. Oh well, maybe I just haven’t experienced it yet. But hopefully, I will be able to even just once.

SportsFest as Team Building

Our project usually engage in Team Building activities to relieve ourselves from the sometimes stressful and toxic work. This year, we just concluded the project’s Sportsfest with the Volleyball’s Final game. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend since my husband was confined in the hospital for several days.

This is the second year that we’ve held this SportsFest within our project. Last year was a success and I was hoping this year is better. And I think we’ve done a great job. We were able to add other games besides the ones played last year. We were able to prevent and correct the mistakes we committed on the previous Sportsfest.

We divided the project into four teams with 10 members each. We asked them to Choose a name for their team and their team captain. The teams were Team LyChi (LyChi stands for two of the members of this team that is being linked to each other hence the name), Koponan ni Eugene, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Holley Parrots. Cool names right?!? Haha!!

Let me share the games that we had.

1. Indoor games (held in one of the conference rooms in the office)
We played three games here, Pictionary, The Price is Right and Pinoy Henyo.

  • Pictionary – One representative will draw the word or phrase to be guessed. Members will guess the word/phrase within the alloted time. If they guess it correctly, they can move on to the next player who would draw. They will continue this until the timer stops.
  • Price is Right – Hosts will show in the projector the item and each team will guess the price of that item. However, we implemented a catch here. The item shown may or may be how it looks like. For example, an iPhone is shown. This iPhone may be bnew or may be broken, in any case will then determine the price.
  • Pinoy Henyo – One representative will be in front to guess the word by asking questions. Members can only answer with Yes, No or Maybe.

2. Table Tennis/Air Hockey/Billiard – These games were played in the recreation are in our office.

3. Badminton/Volleyball – We rented courts for the games. Badminton was played in MetroBadminton in Mandaluyong. 1st round for Volleyball was played in MFI in Ortigas. The second one was in San Carlos Seminary Gym in Guadalupe.

4. Bowling – We were opting to play at the StarMall Bowling center but there were no available schedule. Good thing we were able to reserve four lanes at Paeng’s Skybowl at Robinson’s Galleria.

We still have to tally the overall scores so as of the moment, no one knows the winning team yet. Plus, I have to arrange for the prizes of the teams and the individual awards. I want to check out little trophies in Recto for the individual awards. I’m planning to give out trophies and gift certificates. I just hope I get a chance to go there this weekend. We still have lots to do for the awarding. I’ll give an update after the awarding and I might share some pictures.

The final showdown for Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez will happen on November 12, 2011 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This will be televised on HBO Pay Per View.

This trilogy match will be their third bout as they have already faced each other twice before. First was in May 8, 2004, also at the MGM Grand where it ended in a draw. Pacquiao was supposed to win this if only the third judge, Burt Clements, scored the first round correctly, taking into account the three knockdowns Manny did to Marquez.

They fought for the second time in 2008 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino and Pacquiao won this with a split decision. However, this became controversial as Marquez disputed the results insisting that he should have won both the first and second round.

Pacquiao will begin his rigid two-month training at the Summer capital of the Philippines, Baguio City on the third week of September. But before that, the two fighters, with their entourage, will be on a four-city promotional tour starting on September 3, 2011 here in Manila. After that, they will head to New York on September 6 and then followed by Los Angeles on September 8. The tour will immediately finish on September 8 in Marquez’x home in Mexico City. They will be doing press conference on each city. The first conference will be at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.

People will definitely look forward to the trilogy fight in November.

Kids nowadays differ a lot compared to kids a few years back. Kids these days are mostly accustomed to technology, so as early as 3yrs old, they’re already playing with computers or a PSP or an iPhone. These gadgets might be beneficial for their development in one way or another, but it still lacks the development that they can get on doing activities where they can learn and improve their personal development.

First off, what do I mean by personal development. What I’m talking about here is the physical, emotional, mental and social development that kids can achieve by participating in different activities. Introducing kids to different recreational activities can hone their talent and at the same time enjoy and have fun.

Here are some recreational activities that can be exercised by kids. Technology can still be a great way to do this extra-curricular activities, but the point is, it’s not just games that are being done by kids.

1. Enrolling in sports. There are lots of sports clinic that offers classes for kids such as swimming, basketball and taekwondo. Engaging in sports will develop one’s physical strenght and helps in increasing the children’s social skills.

2. Learning to play the guitar. Taking guitar lessons can develop one’s eye and hand coordination. Plus this is a good way to challenge a kid to hone his/her skill. Nowadays, you can have online guitar lessons so this can also be done at the comfort of one’s home.

3. Learning how to ride a bike. Biking is a good exercise both for kid and adults alike. And in biking, kids can develop their sense of balance plus discipline.

Recently, football became very popular in the Philippine sports arena because of the victory of the men’s national football team, Team Azkals. And our course, with the ladies out there, it’s not only the sports itself that they’re excited about, but it’s the members of the team that’s sending ripples through the community.

Football, or popularly known as soccer here in the philippines, has not really been famous in the field. However, team Azkals became a trending topic both on twitter and facebook during the semifinals of the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup.

Now, almost everyone who follows the sports wolrd are also following football and the team.
Their win in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers gave them a place in the second round when they beat Sri Lanka 4-0. Then they had to face Kuwait, who was a very good team, and the Azkals loses 1-2 and 1-5 on aggregate.

Despite this loss, supporters are still looking forward for the team’s future games. They will soon be facing 3 foreign teams, HongKong, Macau and Chinese taipei, in the 2011 Long Teng Cup. The competition will take place around late September in Chinese Taipei.
